The Spanish Mint has announced the issue of a special collector coin with a value of 40 euros, dedicated to the XCVII Training Cruise of the ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, in which Princess Leonor is part of the crew as a midshipman.
The Official State Bulletin (BOE) has detailed that a maximum of one million units of this commemorative coin will be minted, made of 925 thousandth silver.
Details of the €40 coin: Leonor and Elcano
Each piece will weigh 18 grams and have a diameter of 33 millimeters, making it an object of great value for both collectors and followers of the Spanish monarchy.
The design of the coin will reflect the two main protagonists of this mission.
On the obverse, the portrait of the Princess of Asturias, dressed in her midshipman’s uniform, will be immortalized. Next to her image, the inscriptions “Felipe VI King of Spain” and “Princess Leonor” will be read, highlighting her role within the royal family and her military training.
On the other hand, on the back will appear the iconic training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, with the inscription “XCVII Crucero de Instrucción – Juan Sebastián de Elcano” (XCVII Training Cruise – Juan Sebastián de Elcano).
This ship, with almost a century of history, is one of the most emblematic vessels of the Spanish Navy and a symbol of naval training in Spain.
A training route that crosses the Atlantic
The Juan Sebastián de Elcano set sail last January from Cadiz to begin a six-month voyage that will take it to various cities in the Americas.
During the voyage, Princess Leonor, together with 76 midshipmen, is living a unique experience in her military training.
So far, the ship has stopped in Salvador de Bahía (Brazil), Montevideo (Uruguay) and Punta Arenas (Chile).
Its next stop will be in Valparaiso, Chile, on April 4.
It will then continue on to El Callao (Peru), Panama City (Panama), Cartagena de Indias and Santa Marta (Colombia), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and New York (USA).
From there, the vessel will cross the Atlantic again to return to Spain in July.
