Smoking used to be considered glamorous and popular in elite circles and among royalty, but today it is known to be hazardous to health.
Although no one believes Queen Elizabeth II ever smoked, several members of her family, including her father, King George VI, and her sister, Princess Margaret, smoked, and many of her uncles and other relatives died from smoking-related illnesses.
The 2006 Health Act prevented people from smoking in enclosed public spaces, including workplaces, so smoking was not allowed inside most palaces for some time. However, royals who liked to smoke cigarettes in designated areas on palace grounds saw a ban arrive on May 22, 2016.
In 2016, word came from Buckingham Palace that smoking was banned in all royal residences, including Windsor Castle, St James’s Palace, Kensington Palace, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Clarence House, where Charles resides, had already been a no-smoking zone for years as he hated the habit.
Does Queen Camilla smoke?
The new Queen of England was a smoker for 30 years but had to quit because Charles hates the smell of cigarettes. Camilla smoked about half a pack a day and when she decided to kick the habit she enlisted the help of health guru Mosaraf Ali and was able to quit.
