Princess Diana of Wales By Robert Marquez

This is how the yacht on which Princess Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed spent their last summer sank

A piece of history has disappeared beneath the waves: the yacht Cujo, the boat where Princess Diana spent her last vacation.

The Cujo, which was owned by Dodi Al-Fayed, sank last Saturday, July 29 off the French coast of Nice after colliding with an unknown object.

The seven passengers on board were rescued safe and sound, but the yacht sank nearly 2,500 meters deep to the seabed of the Mediterranean.

The French Gendarmerie reported that the captain gave the distress call as the pumps struggled to contain the leak that resulted from the collision but the Cujo sank 18 nautical miles off Beaulieu-sur-Mer.

The boat, now submerged, rose to fame in the summer of 1997 as one of the scenes of the media romance between Lady Di and Dodi Al-Fayed shortly before he died in the accident on the Alma Bridge in Paris on August 31 of that year.

Al-Fayed is said to have spent more than $1 million on remodeling the Cujo to impress Diana, who was followed by the paparazzi.

That summer, Princess Diana had also been spotted aboard Dodi’s father Mohamed Al-Fayed’s even more luxurious yacht, the Sokar, formerly called Jonikal, where one of the last images of the princess was taken of her sitting on the trampoline looking out at the horizon.

A few weeks later, the couple tragically passed away in a car accident in Paris, putting a devastating end to Diana’s stay in France.

Perhaps disappearing from the very shores that hosted Diana’s last days is the appropriate end for the Cujo.
