Fighting the British monarchy backfired on Mohamed Al-Fayed, the Egyptian tycoon and father of Dodi, Princess Diana’s boyfriend, who died with her in a controversial accident on August 31, 1997.
In the aftermath, Al-Fayed waged a legal and media battle to get answers about the circumstances of his son’s and Lady Di’s deaths.
He argued that his son’s death was the result of a conspiracy and plot by the British Crown, which did not accept the princess’s romance with his son and had planned his murder to prevent the relationship from continuing and becoming a public scandal.
However, official investigations concluded that the accident was caused by speeding and the presence of paparazzi.
Despite these conclusions, Mohamed Al-Fayed continued to defend his theories and seek justice for his son and Diana. His struggle and his claims sparked a public debate about the relationship between royalty, the media and transparency in investigations.
What happened to Mohamed Al-Fayed?
The fortunes of Mohamed Al-Fayed and his family changed drastically. The tragedy shocked the world and left the businessman devastated by the loss of his son.
After finding no answers to his questions, Al-Fayed decided to step away from the media spotlight.
In 2010, he sold the famous Harrods chain of stores in the UK, the Fulham FC soccer team, and moved to Switzerland with his wife, model Heidi Wathen. However, he is still the owner of the luxurious Ritz Hotel in Paris.
At 94, Al-Fayed is confident that God’s justice will take care of Dodi and Diana’s deaths.
In 2008, the businessman made a statement when he learned of the verdict that put an end to his theory of how his son and the princess died.
“I am sure they are blessing in their deep heart what I’m doing to discover the truth. But I have enough. I’m leaving the rest for God to get my revenge. But I’m not doing anything any more… This is the end… For the sake of the Princes and for me after suffering for 10 years”, he said.
