The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are back in the news.
A photograph of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, taken after they stepped down from their roles as royals, has been added to the National Portrait Gallery’s collection.
National Portrait Gallery Acquires Meghan and Harry Photo
On May 23, Misan Harriman, a friend and frequent photographer of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced on Instagram that one of his images of the couple was acquired by the gallery.
The black-and-white photo shows Meghan and Harry holding hands as they prepare to go on stage at the One Young World Summit in Manchester, England.
This photograph, taken on September 5, 2022, was captured just three days before Queen Elizabeth’s death.
Meghan and Harry, who moved to California in 2020 after leaving their senior royal duties, were in Europe for various charity events when the Queen passed away on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, marking the end of her 70-year reign.
The couple remained in England to participate in the ensuing funerary events.
“I am humbled and proud to announce that my portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is now part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery,” Harriman wrote in his Instagram posts. “Dare to dream folks!”
A spokesperson from the National Portrait Gallery mentioned that there are no immediate plans to display the image of Meghan and Harry.
It will first go through the gallery’s cataloging process before being available on their website.
This addition to the gallery’s collection has a special connection to the royal family.
Kate Middleton became the royal patron of the National Portrait Gallery shortly after her marriage to Prince William in 2011.
The Princess of Wales, who studied art history at the University of St. Andrews, has described herself as an “enthusiastic amateur photographer.”
Harriman has captured many important moments for Meghan and Harry’s family in recent years, including their 2021 pregnancy announcement and a birthday photo of their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
Earlier this month, he joined the Duke and Duchess on their trip to Nigeria, his birthplace.
For Harriman Meghan is “like a sister” to him.
“I’ve been very lucky to photograph many special moments with her, her husband, and their family,” he said. “My images of them do all the talking,” He told People.
