James, Earl of Wessex By Lillian Torres

The Mystery of James of Wessex’s Title: Why He Isn’t a ‘Prince’

James, the son of Prince Edward does not hold the title of prince.

James, Earl of Wessex, is the grandson of Queen Elizabeth, along with his cousin Prince William and his brother Prince Harry. However, James does not bear the title of prince, which arouses the curiosity of many.

As he grows older—he is already 17 years old—it seems that attention to him is also increasing, although he remains unknown to many despite being part of one of the most famous monarchies in the world.

With the passing of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, James became the Duke of Wessex and is the son of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Edward and Sophie.

His popularity has been on the rise, especially after appearing at the Queen’s funeral, but the question many are asking is: why doesn’t he have the title of prince?

Why is Prince Edward’s son not a prince?

When James was born on December 17, 2007, he was eighth in line to the throne, which theoretically entitled him to the treatment of “His Royal Highness,” like other members of the family.

However, his parents made the decision to relinquish those titles to protect him from the media blitz that affects many members of the royal family. Together with his sister, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, they decided that James would not carry the “His Royal Highness” treatment for the rest of his life.

As Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children have been born, as well as Prince Harry’s, James’s position in the line of succession has changed.

He now ranks fifteenth, giving him a much more secondary role within the royal family.

Although his family enjoys great popularity, it’s curious how his place in the line of succession has kept James in a less prominent corner of the public radar.

The times he has been seen at official events are few and far between, with his most recent appearance, as we reported on RoyalFamily.news, being at the traditional Christmas walk at Sandringham, where he was accompanied by other members of the royal family, including Kate Middleton.

So, although James, Earl of Wessex, is a royal, his life has been marked by his family’s desire to preserve his privacy and lead a quieter life.

Even with his name on the Windsor list, his story remains an intriguing mix of tradition and modernity.
