The funeral of Pope Francis, to be held on Saturday, April 26 in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, will be attended by political and religious leaders and members of royalty, including King Felipe and Queen Letizia.

For this ceremony, European royals will have to follow a very specific dress code.

Women are called to wear black, with sober garments, without glitter or flashy ornaments.

Dresses must have long sleeves and reach at least to the knee.

In some cases, it is usual to wear a mantilla and a comb, although it is not mandatory.

Makeup should be subdued, with neutral and natural tones. No red lips or intense shadows.

Men’s attire also requires discretion. A dark suit, preferably black, a white shirt and a sober tie are the norm.

Shoes should be closed-toed and match the outfit.

Jewelry, if worn, should go unnoticed: pearls are common because of their symbolism, and rings are usually limited to wedding bands.

Although not all attendees will be subject to such precise rules, the royals are accustomed to this type of requirements.
