During the Trooping the Colour parade, held on June 14 in honor of King Charles III’s birthday, one scene in particular stole the show on social media.
It was the moment when Princess Kate, accompanied by her children, waved from her carriage as they passed a group of anti-monarchy protesters.
Kate Middleton: Anti-monarchy protests at Trooping the Colour
The image was captured by cameras and quickly went viral on TikTok, where the video racked up more than 763,000 views and 75,000 likes.
The protesters, grouped behind security fences, carried banners with the slogan “Not My King.” They belong to Republic, an organization that seeks to replace the monarchy with a democratically elected head of state.
The presence of this group of protesters has become common at royal events since the death of Elizabeth II.
Graham Smith, executive director of Republic, described the protest as successful and said the royal family took notice.
In the comments section of the viral video, some messages stood out:
One online user wrote: “I feel bad because they boo at Princess of Wales Catherine in front of her 3 kids.” Another user who received a lot of support wrote: “I’d rather have a royal family than a president. They are the only tradition I feel like the UK has left. I’d rather my tax went to the working Royals doing their humanitarian deeds than people on benefits for life offering nothing to society.“ Another user said: ”Imagine finally becoming king and this happens.”
The debate surrounding the British monarchy continues to be very present on the internet.
