Meghan Markle’s visit to Paris has shifted from a glamorous reappearance to an unexpected controversy.
It all began when the duchess shared a short video on Instagram of her nighttime journey through the city, right after attending the Balenciaga fashion show.
In the images, she was seen in the back seat of a car, crossing the Seine and approaching the Pont de l’Alma, the same location where Princess Diana lost her life in 1997. For many, that simple gesture was “completely disconcerting.”
The brief clip, lasting just a few seconds, showed Meghan’s feet resting on the seat in front of her, while the camera captured the reflections of the water and the city lights. Perhaps she did it without any symbolic intention, perhaps just as part of her aesthetic and cinematic style.
But the context carries weight. We are talking about Diana’s daughter-in-law and a place that holds a very strong emotional significance for millions of people.
As expected, the networks reacted quickly: some described the video as insensitive, while others simply couldn’t believe it had been published.
Royal experts like Richard Fitzwilliams described it as a gesture that was “insensitive beyond all logic.”
However, it is also worth asking whether Meghan was fully aware of the symbolism of the route. Maybe it was just a coincidence on a night filled with glamour and cameras.
Despite the uproar, Meghan traveled to Paris to support designer Pierpaolo Piccioli in his debut for Balenciaga, wearing an impeccable white look that made headlines. But the video ended up taking over the conversation.
