The image appears perfect: Charles III and Camilla smile in the Roman gardens of Villa Wolkonsky, where they posed last April for the Christmas card they shared this weekend on their social media accounts.
But behind that official postcard lies a complicated year. The British monarch was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024, around the same time as Kate Middleton, and is still undergoing treatment.
“The King and Queen are pleased to share their Christmas card for this year”, was part of the text accompanying the photograph.

At 77, he has managed to resume much of his schedule, although those close to him acknowledge he lacks the energy he once had.
The protocol remains in place: he will attend Mass at the St. Mary Magdalene Church on Christmas morning and record his annual speech.

However, sources close to the palace have admitted to outlets like US Weekly and Page Six that he is “not at his best” and that the situation is being assessed daily.
A source noted that Charles is a man who prioritizes duty above all else, but also understands the value of family time.

In September, during a visit to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, he stated that he was not feeling “too bad,” a statement that raised more questions than it provided clarity.
After a particularly challenging 2024 for the royal family, these holidays offer a much-needed respite. The king’s health remains uncertain, but for now, the calendar continues and traditions are upheld.
