Princess Leonor departed the General Air and Space Academy in San Javier last weekend to travel to Madrid.
The occasion was the 58th birthday of her father, King Felipe. Although his birthday was on Friday, he waited until Saturday to hold a family gathering at Zarzuela.

Leonor was there with her sister Sofia, who also traveled from Lisbon, where she is studying for her first year of college.
Queen Letizia and Queen Sofia attended the meeting. For the emeritus queen, it was an important moment, as she sought refuge with her family two weeks after the funeral of her sister, Irene of Greece.
The celebration also included some of Felipe’s closest friends, although their exact identities remain unknown.

What is clear is that both he and Letizia cherish their friendships, which provide their best escape from their institutional roles. They strive to maintain a balance between public and private life, and it appears they are succeeding.
For Leonor, these trips to Madrid offer a welcome break from her intense routine in Murcia. Since September, she has been in San Javier completing her third year of military training, preparing to become Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. But she also has a life outside of that.

Earlier this year, it became known that she frequents pubs and nightclubs with her academy classmates, always accompanied by her security detail. Last Christmas, she enjoyed evening plans with her friends.
She is 20 years old, and although her path has been determined since birth, she still needs to disconnect, even though she can’t choose what to study and her every move is publicly scrutinized. Family and friends are her anchor.
These getaways to Madrid or outings in Murcia allow her to experience some normalcy amidst a life that is anything but normal.
