The Spanish royal family has an unwritten rule for March 8: silence. International Women’s Day usually goes by without an official statement, as the Spanish Royal Family prefers to stay out of the political debate surrounding the date.
That’s why it was surprising that the Princess of Girona Foundation, chaired by Leonor, decided to publish a message on that day. This move went almost unnoticed in the media, but royal expert Ana Polo Alonso didn’t hesitate to comment on it in Semana, stating bluntly, “I thought it was very good.”

What the Princess of Girona Foundation’s message said on International Women’s Day
The text was far from lukewarm. “Today, we commemorate International Women’s Day. We recognize their talent, their perseverance, and their unique way of transforming the world. They are talent in action. And at the Foundation, we stand by their side, promoting female role models in all fields.”

The text was accompanied by an image of Princess Leonor presenting an award to a recipient, with Queen Letizia visible in the background. The royal expert summed it up like this: “This is very good.” The message, the photo… it’s all good.” The content and the format were just right, at just the right time.

The photo chosen was no accident. It shows Princess Leonor in the act of recognizing another woman’s work. According to Polo Alonso, this confirms that Leonor feels at ease among women leaders and that her admiration for those who work hard, without a title or position, is genuine.

One thing this gesture makes clear is that Leonor is no longer just the heiress who stands by her side. She has a voice of her own, even if it’s only through the foundation that bears her name.
