Queen Mary Welcomes New Royal Horses to Christiansborg Palace

This week, Queen Mary of Denmark went to Christiansborg Palace to welcome two new horses to the royal stables, the first additions since King Frederik X took the throne in 2024 following the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe II, after 52 years on the throne.

Queen Mary greeted the horses with apple slices and petting. No protocol, no distance. That’s who she is.

What Queen Mary was wearing at Christiansborg

For the occasion, Mary chose a carefully considered outfit. At the heart of her outfit was a herringbone wool blazer with patch pockets from Ralph Lauren, a piece from the 2019 collection.

She paired it with a white shirt, a gray Maje sweater, and a black skirt, and she wore her Sophie Bille Brahe earrings.

The result was a workwear-inspired look with that structured touch that Mary pulls off so well, without veering into the overly formal or the overly casual. And there’s more to the story than meets the eye, because she had already worn that blazer before—she even shared it with her daughter, Princess Josephine, on another occasion.

Why the new horses are named Flik and Flak

Their names weren’t chosen on a whim. Flik and Flak are a direct reference to a pair of horses that existed during the reign of King Christian X, and they share the same initials as the current King Frederik.

The two new horses are Oldenburgs, a warm-blooded breed originally from Lower Saxony, in the former region of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.

Raised in Denmark, they are joining the Christiansborg riding school, where the royal family’s distinctive white draft horses are kept. What’s remarkable is that this breed hadn’t set foot on those grounds for nearly twenty years. Flik and Flak are starting a new chapter, and Mary was there to welcome them.
