Meghan Markle has broken her silence about her relationship with her father and has offered an explanation that completely changes a story that has been told for years. The Duchess of Sussex says she kept her distance from Thomas Markle and didn’t let him meet Archie and Lilibet for one reason only: to protect them.
According to her account, in 2018, the London Metropolitan Police shared a letter with her that contained “concerning and disturbing” allegations against him, and they assured her that the allegations were being investigated. Her statement comes after The Sun reported that her 82-year-old father is being investigated for allegedly possessing images of child sexual abuse. He denies everything, and he hasn’t been formally charged with any crime.

What are Thomas Markle’s charges?
The complaint comes from his son, 60-year-old Thomas Markle Jr., who claims he discovered the material in July while going through boxes of his father’s belongings at his former home in Cebu Province, Philippines. The Philippine Department of Justice has confirmed that it is investigating the case of an American man in his 80s, and the FBI has indicated that it will support local authorities.

Thomas Markle Sr. refers to “sickening lies” and accuses his son of acting for financial gain, claiming that his son stopped providing him with financial support that same month. He says the computers were shipped by boat from Mexico, that he doesn’t know who had access to them, and that he agrees to a forensic examination. His daughter Samantha, Meghan’s half-sister and his caregiver, also stands by him and believes someone may have set him up.
A rift that began before the royal wedding
The rift dates back to 2018, when Thomas Markle didn’t attend the wedding in Windsor, claiming he had suffered a heart attack. This came after it was revealed that he had arranged for paparazzi photos to be taken and sold to the press. Since then, he hasn’t met Harry or his grandchildren, and he has given numerous interviews in which he has portrayed Meghan as a cruel daughter who turned her back on him. That same summer, she wrote him a letter asking him to stop talking to the media, which he then leaked to The Mail on Sunday. Meghan sued the newspaper and won in 2021. At that trial, she said the letter contained “unpleasant truths.”

Why might this revelation change Meghan’s image?
The timing is no coincidence when it comes to media pressure. Meghan and Harry returned to the United Kingdom in August with their children, after six years in the United States, and their return has been met with a wave of criticism. Many royal experts believe this episode could stir up sympathy that was previously scarce among the British public and dismantle the narrative of the ruthless daughter.

Until now, every time Meghan remained silent, it was interpreted as coldness. If her account holds up, what many interpreted as contempt might instead have been caution in light of an ongoing investigation. Still, it’s worth remembering that the accusations against her father have not been proven and that the justice system will have the final say.
