King Charles III has begun to implement and manage his reign in his own way and breaks with the tradition of Elizabeth II in choosing his official residence.

Buckingham Palace will not receive King Charles III and his wife Camilla as new inhabitants, thus breaking the tradition set by the last English sovereigns since Queen Victoria chose it as her official residence in 1837, and continued throughout her reign Elizabeth II.

Where does King Charles III live?

The new king of England has made the logistical and pragmatic decision to continue living in Clarence House with the queen consort, as he has done for the past 20 years.

Buckingham was the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II until almost the last years of her life, then she moved to Windsor, where she spent the pandemic with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.

According to some experts, the decision of Charles III to continue living in the stately residence of Clarence House is due to the enormous expenses that would involve a move and maintain a home like Buckingham.

Buckingham Palace would continue to play a predominant role for receptions and other official events, and Clarence House is only a few minutes away from the imposing and majestic building located in the center of London.

It is said that among King Charles’ plans would be the possibility of converting Buckingham, Windsor and Balmoral into public spaces or turning them into a museum in memory of his mother.

    Where is Clarence House?

Clarence House is only a 5 minute walk from Buckingham Palace. The Mall is the street that connects them and leads to Trafalgar Square, the entrance to the palace. Likewise, the home of King Charles and Queen Camilla shares gardens with St James’s Palace, making it a place of beauty and tranquility in the middle of bustling London.

It was built in 1825 by the famous architect John Nash. It was the residence of the Queen Mother. Princess Margaret also lived at Clarence House when she was unmarried.
