Although the relationship between Felipe VI’s parents is almost non-existent, every December they maintain a small and unique tradition that evokes a certain family feeling.
As happens in many royal households, the arrival of Christmas is celebrated by sending postcards full of good wishes.
The Spanish Royal Family is no exception, and every year they make an effort to send a touching Christmas card accompanied by a family portrait.
This year, Zarzuela Palace went ahead and sent its traditional Christmas card on December 16.
The card shows a photograph of King Felipe and Queen Letizia posing with their two daughters, captured during the celebrations for the tenth anniversary of the Proclamation.
Christmas card of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia
Not only do the current monarchs send their best wishes; the king and queen emeritus, Juan Carlos I and Sofia of Greece, also take a moment to send a message that, in a curious gesture, they sign together.
This gesture becomes the only tradition that seems to unite Felipe VI’s parents, despite their notable distance since they decided to separate years ago, although they have not officially divorced.
As reported in the Spanish press, this year’s card from the former king and queen carries a brief but meaningful greeting, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025,” with Juan Carlos and Sofia’s signature.
In addition to the Christmas message, the postcard is adorned with a religious image.
The choice of this image leaves no doubt about the reality of the relationship between Juan Carlos and Sofia. At this point, it seems evident that their separation is deeper than ever.
