During the gala dinner in honor of the state visit of the King and Queen of Denmark to Finland, Queen Mary became the center of attention when she dusted off a historic jewel from the Danish royal treasury.

The wife of Frederick X surprised by wearing a tiara that had not seen the light of day for almost 140 years, a piece with a history as fascinating as its appearance.

The jewel in question belonged to Queen Caroline Amalia, consort of Christian VIII, and is characterized by its structure in yellow gold and eleven set gems.

These stones were collected by the monarch herself during a trip to Italy in 1819, when she visited Rome and the excavations of Pompeii.

According to the Danish Royal House, this type of jewelry reflected the classicist taste of the time and was designed for everyday wear, unlike the more flamboyant diamond tiaras that usually starred in gala events.

But the tiara was not the only piece of historical value Mary chose for the occasion.

She also wore a bracelet that once belonged to Princess Vilhelmine Marie, a gift from her husband, Frederick VII, during a trip in 1828.

This accessory, made of gold and decorated with semi-precious stones extracted from Vesuvius, was presented at the time inside a case with a romantic inscription in French:

“C’est du sommet du Vésuve enflammé que mon cœur vole à toi“ (”It is from the top of the fiery Vesuvius that my heart flies to you”).

Mary’s attire matched the spectacular jewelry she wore.

For this special evening, the queen rescued a dress by Danish designer Jesper Høvring, a model with a striking print in shades of orange, mustard and brown, with details of leaves that evoke autumn.

This dress, which she debuted at the 2019 New Year’s Eve dinner, was modified to give it a renewed air: on this occasion, Mary chose to add a mustard-colored sash to mark her silhouette.

Completing her styling, the queen wore the navy blue sash of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, fastened with a yellow gold brooch, perfectly coordinated with the earrings and the rest of her jewelry.
