As part of “Volunteer Week,” King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium made a meaningful visit to Mechelen on March 4, 2025.

This annual event, running from March 1 to March 9, shines a light on the efforts of volunteers across the country.

Mechelen, in particular, holds a special honor this year as the first Belgian city to be named “European Volunteering Capital.”

The recognition celebrates the invaluable work of thousands of volunteers who contribute daily to building a more inclusive and supportive community.

The royal couple began their visit at City Hall, where they attended a reception acknowledging the dedication of local volunteers.

From there, they proceeded to De Lage Drempel, an organization committed to assisting individuals facing poverty.

Their next stop was Circolito, a youth circus school that introduces children and young people to the world of acrobatics and performance in a fun, inclusive environment.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde engaged warmly with volunteers, young performers, and their families.

For the occasion, Queen Mathilde opted for an ensemble with a nod to Belgian design. She donned a striking floral brocade coat by Dries Van Noten, layered over a chic draped ruffle top from Natan.
