Queen Letizia and King Felipe experienced an exciting moment.
On February 26, they had the opportunity to see the portraits that renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz had taken of them for the Bank of Spain in person for the first time.
Although the images had been made public last November, it wasn’t until this month that they were able to enjoy them face-to-face.
These portraits, a tribute to their first ten years of reign and their two decades of marriage, were a special commission that sought to capture the essence of this royal couple.
Felipe and Letizia’s reaction to their portraits
Upon entering the room where their images are exhibited, one could feel the anticipation in the air.
After the customary greeting, Letizia and Felipe, visibly moved, immersed themselves in the experience, carefully looking at what had been created.
The king and queen shared brief moments of complicity and gestures that spoke louder than a thousand words.
Although the portraits have been criticized, the truth is that they cost the Bank of Spain more than 150,000 dollars to produce.
In addition, the rights to use these snapshots are shared between the institution and Leibovitz.
The Royal House emphasized that the photographer’s proposal represents a significant change in a tradition that dates back to the beginnings of the Bank of Spain, adding a fresh and contemporary air to it.
During their visit, Felipe and Letizia had the opportunity to meet Annie again, whom they received with affection.
She shared details about the creative process she carried out during the photo shoots with them, and a special chemistry could be felt between the photographer and the royal couple—something that had already been noticed during the famous photo shoot.
When asked their opinion about the portraits, it was Felipe VI who, kindly, took the initiative to answer.
“It is not for us to assess,” he commented, before Letizia turned to the journalists with a big smile, asking, ”And what do you think?”
Although they did not say it directly, the looks and the emotions of both made it clear that they were more than satisfied with the result.
