Princess Diana’s last words come to light 23 years after her accident. The firefighter who came to the rescue of William and Harry’s mother revealed what those tough minutes in the life of the village princess were like.
On Monday, August 31, one more year since the death of the remembered Lady Di, more details come to light about the fatal accident that cost her life, her partner Dodi Al-Fayed, her driver and bodyguard.
Last words of Princess Diana
Xavier Gourmelon, was the firefighter who attended the accident for the first rescue work for the injured that night in a Paris tunnel on August 31, 1997.
According to his own words, the firefighter did not believe that Diana died, he assured that when she came to the rescue she had her eyes open and was conscious but minutes later he was desperately fighting to save her life.
Gourmelon found a “blonde woman” sitting in the back seat of a crashed car and told her to “keep calm.”
He said that at first he had no idea who his patient was. He put oxygen on her before they took her out of the crashed vehicle, took her hand to comfort her and Diana asked:
“My God, what happened?”
He claims that there was no blood on it, and although he could see a slight injury to his right shoulder, he did not think it was anything significant.
But moments later everything changed in a matter of seconds when he went into cardiac arrest.
Details of Princess Diana’s accident
Gourmelon told the British newspaper The Sun that the princess suffered respiratory arrest and had to resuscitate her to start breathing.
“I massaged her heart and a few seconds later she started breathing again. It was a relief, of course, because you want to save lives, and that’s what I thought I had done.
“To be honest, I thought I would live. As far as I knew, when I was in the ambulance I was alive and I expected her to live. But I found out later that she had died in the hospital. It was very disturbing.
“Now I know there were serious internal injuries, but the whole episode is still on my mind. And the memory of that night will stay with me forever.
A few minutes after arriving at the Pitié-Salpétrière Hospital, Diana died due to the serious internal injuries that she presented. They reported that he suffered a ruptured blood vessel near his heart.
Gourmelon said it was “very upsetting” when he found out that the princess had passed away. The firefighter will go down in history as the one who heard the last words of Princess Diana.
