Many people may find it a surprise to learn that Queen Letizia, 50, was married for more than 10 years to an award-winning writer and professor named Alonso Guerrero, 60.
Last February 15, the magazine ‘Paris Match’ published an article dedicated to the former husband of Letizia Ortiz, who in November 2022 published a new book, under the title ‘Happy women are a chimera’ (Las mujeres felices son una quimera).
Who is Alonso Guerrero, Queen Letizia first husband?
Alonso Guerrero is a writer and professor of Language and Literature. He has written fiction books, essays, literary criticism and opinion journalism. He has won several awards in Spain.
On August 7, 1998, Alonso Guerrero married Letizia Ortiz, now Queen of Spain. The two met when she was a student and he was a teacher at the Ramiro de Maeztu Institute in Madrid (Letizia was 10 years younger than him). They married civilly after a courtship of almost 10 years, but divorced a year after getting married, in 1999.
What did Alonso Guerrero say about Queen Letizia of Spain?
The magazine asked the writer if “should we see an allusion to his first royal wife?” in the title of this novel. The former husband of the Queen of Spain replied:
“No, the book is in fact a first crime novel that combines investigation of a murder disguised as a suicide.”
For Guerrero, to see in the novel a reference to his ex-wife is ‘fanciful.”
“I never thought about the Queen while I was writing,” he once told ‘Noticias Financieras’ magazine last year.
Alonso has assured that for years he has had no contact with Queen Letizia or King Felipe. The writer revealed that from time to time he would go to the Zarzuela Palace, to have dinner with friends, but his life has changed since he left Madrid to live in Badajoz.
The ex-husband of Letizia Ortiz has said that:
“My marriage to Queen Letizia is a past situation and overcome. I never talk about it and I find it very boring to go back to it”.
When then Princess Letizia and Prince Felipe announced their engagement in November 2003, the Zarzuela Palace asked Alonso Guerrero to remove “all traces of his past marriage to the new Queen of Spain.”
Guerrero remarried twice. First with a mathematics teacher, then he divorced in 2012, and then in 2019 he married María Dolores Corral.
