The Golden Globes ceremony, which honors the best in film and television, was attended by many Hollywood celebrities on January 7, 2024.
One of the highlights of the night was the reunion of the cast of the hit series “Suits,” which catapulted Meghan Markle to fame and which she left in the seventh season when her engagement to Prince Harry was announced.
But while her co-stars Patrick J. Adams, Gina Torres, Sarah Rafferty and Gabriel Macht were on stage to present one of the awards, the Duchess of Sussex was the big absentee.
Why Meghan Markle did not attend the Golden Globes
At first, her own colleagues claimed that she did not attend because they did not have her phone number.
The truth is, she declined to attend the event because of another important commitment she had, a close source told Page Six.
“We asked the Duchess, but we were told she unfortunately had a prior engagement,” the source said.
Although it is unknown what that event was, the truth is that it prevented her from attending the Golden Globes with her friends from ‘Suits.
Whatever the event was, it certainly saved her from an awkward moment with the royal family’s ridicule.
During the ceremony, host Jo Koy made some jokes in his opening monologue, including some references to the British monarchy and the royal family.
Although he also took aim at the “rich, white, dysfunctional royal family,” the host did not directly comment on Meghan Markle’s absence.
He said: “Succession has nine nominations. Just a great show about a rich, white, dysfunctional family, all scheming – oh, wait, that’s The Crown. I’m sorry.”
“Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing,” Koy said, adding, “And that’s just from Netflix.”
However, some media outlets speculated that she knew there might be some jokes about her, and that may have been another reason the Duchess decided not to attend.
