On August 15, 2023, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, arrived in Colombia after accepting an invitation from the country’s Vice President, Francia Márquez.
This trip is shaping up to be another success for the Sussex brand, focusing on important social issues that resonate with the public agenda.
After an intense first day with four events on the agenda, Friday the 16th was a bit more relaxed.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s second day in Colombia
On their second day in Colombia, the couple visited Colegio Santa Fe and Colegio La Giralda, where they focused on the relevance of social-emotional well-being in education.
The school visit gave them the opportunity to interact directly with the students, highlighting the importance of inclusive education and emotional support in the development of young people.
During their visit, Harry and Meghan flaunted their Spanish skills. The Duke interacted with the students in the language, asking them their names and ages, while Meghan mentioned her son Archie, creating an emotional bond with the children.
“You’re the same age as my son, Archie!” she told a student in Spanish.
This moment demonstrates not only the couple’s accessibility but also Meghan’s personal commitment to the language, stemming from her experience in Argentina and Spain.
Suffice it to say that Meghan knows the language very well. She interned at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied in Madrid, Spain, helping to hone her Spanish-speaking skills.
The day at the school was enriching, as the children welcomed the couple with performances that included traditional Colombian costumes and cultural songs, highlighting the value the couple places on local culture.
In addition, three trees were planted to promote environmental awareness and appreciation for nature.
In parallel to their educational focus, Prince Harry and Meghan are also scheduled to participate in events related to the Invictus Games, strengthening Colombia’s connection to this initiative that supports veterans and wounded military personnel.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tour of Colombia is a promotional trip, as well as a platform to advocate for youth welfare and social engagement.
With future stops in Cartagena and Cali, the couple continues to highlight the work of the Archewell Foundation, contributing to awareness and positive development in diverse communities.
