Princess Leonor, now 18 and of age, faces new responsibilities in her training to become the future Queen of Spain.
However, she will not yet fully assume her duties as Princess of Asturias, following the example of her father, the current monarch.
Princess Leonor’s salary
Vanity Fair magazine reports that although King Felipe’s daughter is of age, she will not yet assume her duties as Princess of Asturias, citing the same previous experience of the current monarch.
Leonor will spend three years in military training and then enter university, indicating that she is not yet ready to assume a more prominent role as a representative of the Spanish Crown. These limitations are also reflected in her income.
According to Vanity Fair, the royals receive an allowance from the crown budget to cover their daughters’ expenses, including education.
Currently, the King and Queen’s daughters are completing their education, so they are not expected to receive an official salary in the short term.
In fact, Leonor waived the cadets’ salary, which amounts to about $440 a month.
It is the parents who pay for their expenses and allowances out of their own income.
However, it is possible to make a rough estimate of how much Leonor could earn when she begins her “working” activities as a princess.
According to the itemized budgets of the Royal Household, when Felipe was Prince of Asturias, his annual allowance was 50% of what King Juan Carlos received.
Taking into account the monarch’s current income and assuming no changes in the future, Leonor could earn around $143,067 gross annually, an amount that falls between her mother’s salary and her grandmother’s.
Queen Letizia earns about $156,903, King Felipe’s salary is about $285,467, and Queen Emeritus Sofia receives a salary of about $128,463.
Among the expenses earmarked for the crown, they are the only members of the royal family to receive any income.
It is important to note that King Felipe began receiving his crown allowance at the age of 30, so a similar scenario could be repeated for Princess Leonor.
Only time will tell if Leonor will assume her role as future queen before her father.
