The Infanta Cristina is going through a complicated summer, marked by concerns that have been weighing on her for some time, particularly in relation to her children.
According to close sources, the younger sister of King Felipe VI feels overwhelmed by the uncertainty surrounding the future of three of her four children: Irene, Miguel and Juan.
This situation has led her to seek the support of her mother, Queen Sofia.
Infanta Cristina’s Kids Move to Zarzuela with Queen Sofia
Cristina has been deeply concerned because her children are not clear about what direction to take in their lives. In particular, Irene who returned from a trip to Cambodia as part of a cooperation program, seeking clarity about her next steps; Miguel resides in Madrid, but has not yet found a stable job; and Juan, recently, made the decision to leave London to spend a year in Spain, taking a sabbatical.
Furthermore, information has emerged that in addition to Irene and Miguel, who currently live in the Zarzuela Palace with their grandmother, Queen Sofia, Juan, who recently suffered a heartbreak in Lodres, will be joining them.
Although the King’s House has not officially commented on the matter, sources close to La Zarzuela have confirmed this situation to the Spanish website Monarquía Confidencial.
These sources also mention that, although Queen Sofia has always shown great affection and concern for her grandchildren, a decision as significant as her residence in Zarzuela would have required the approval of King Felipe VI.
It is important to remember that the relationship between King Felipe VI and his sister Cristina has been distant since Iñaki Urdangarin, Cristina’s husband, and Cristina herself, were involved in corruption issues.
This distance led the king to reduce the number of members of the Royal Family, excluding his two sisters.
However, in recent months, there seems to have been a rapprochement between Felipe VI and Cristina, driven in large part by Queen Sofia’s desire for her grandchildren to be well cared for.
According to sources close to the Palace, the recent decision to allow the three Urdangarin siblings to reside in Zarzuela has been made possible by this rapprochement.
“They already met again at Easter in Madrid, and at that time they did not hide. Something similar happened in Marivent. The relationship between them has improved considerably,” comment people close to the royal entourage.
In addition, it is said that the move to the royal residence has been authorized by both King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
“Infanta Cristina not only spoke to her brother, she also spoke to Queen Letizia, which is logical,” the sources add, suggesting that the royal family is starting to unite again, with King Felipe willing to support his sister in this difficult moment.
