On October 12, the National Day in Madrid was celebrated in an atmosphere marked by rain, but also by the notable absence of the Infanta Sofia.
While her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and her sister Princess Leonor attended the military parade and the reception at the Royal Palace, Sofia remained in Wales, where she is studying her second year of the International Baccalaureate at the UWC Atlantic College.
Infanta Sofia Celebrates Spain’s National Day from Gales
Unlike other years, Sofia did not travel to Spain for the event. According to sources close to the Royal House, although Saturday would have allowed for a short trip, the King and Queen opted to spare her the trip and focus on future important appointments, such as the Princess of Asturias Awards, to be held on October 25 in Oviedo.
Although she was not present in Madrid, Sofia celebrated the National Day from the UWC Atlantic College, where it is tradition to raise the national flags on special days.
On this occasion, the Spanish flag flew at the college, a gesture that was captured by followers of the infanta on social media.
Sofia’s academic and personal life at the UWC Atlantic College
Sofia’s life in Wales is marked by her intense academic days, but also by different activities she performs.
She recently participated in survival exercises at the ‘Celtic’ camp, similar to those that her sister Leonor did in Zaragoza during her military training.
Some sources stated that, although the challenges are not as strict as Leonor’s, they have been a great experience for the infanta.
To distract herself, Sofia usually goes to the commercial premises of Llantwit Major, a town located near the school, in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Despite her academic responsibilities, Sofia continues to dedicate time to her passion for soccer. On weekends, when she has free time, she usually plays with her teammates.
From Monarquia Confidencial, they assure that, Sofia is very good at this sport and enjoys it as a way to disconnect and relax.
