The recent coming of age of the Infanta Sofia has aroused interest as to whether she will follow in the footsteps of her sister Leonor and take the oath to the Spanish Constitution.
Unlike the princess of Asturias, who is called to inherit the Crown, the youngest daughter of the kings has no legal obligation to do so.
This is confirmed by sources close to the Royal House, who insist that, although it is a possibility, there is no mandate that requires it.
No Obligation for Sofoa to Swear the Constitution
The Constitution only contemplates this solemn act for the monarch and his direct heir, in order to reaffirm their link with the constitutional order.
In the case of Sofia, any decision in this sense would be strictly voluntary.
There are no established protocols or similar precedents with other members of the royal family who are not heirs to the throne.
Zarzuela has not issued any statement in this regard. However, it is not ruled out that, if the family deems it appropriate, the Infanta could star in a symbolic ceremony.
If the swearing-in takes place, it would set a precedent which, although it would not modify the official protocol, would be a way of expressing her institutional commitment, although without legal implications.
