On April 29, the Infanta Sofia celebrated her 17th birthday. While some might assume that the young lady spent the day devoted to her studies, the German press points out that there was indeed a celebration, and a rather controversial one at that.
Sofia, daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, has been living in Wales since August 2023, where she studies at the UWC Atlantic College, the same institute attended by Princess Leonor.
For the first time, the youngest daughter of the King and Queen celebrated her birthday away from home. However, Sofia enjoyed a great party that was not without controversy.
Infanta Sofia’s birthday party
The German magazine Bunte reported that a serious incident overshadowed Sofia’s celebration, suggesting that the event almost resulted in the expulsion of some students.
During the party, Sofia and her classmates held a photo shoot, a common practice among teenagers.
However, the situation became complicated when one of the photos was shared on social media and quickly went viral.
Bunte points out that the dissemination of this image generated controversy, given that the residence of Letizia and Felipe’s daughter in Wales is characterized by its discretion, and it is strictly forbidden to publish images of it to avoid media incidents.
The boarding school has as a fundamental rule the protection of the privacy of its students, and this act, which seemed harmless, caused a considerable uproar, forcing the administration to intervene.
Despite the apparent calm of the royal couple in Zaragoza, international sources indicate that the incident caused Felipe and Letizia to worry about their daughter’s safety.
However, the incident did not escalate thanks to Sofia, who made sure she was not recognizable in the photo by hiding her face.
Despite the circumstances, Bunte reveals that Leonor’s sister enjoyed the evening in the company of her UWC friends.
How is the Infanta Sofia’s life?
Since the Infanta Sofia’s departure for Wales last August, information about her has been scarce, limited to her appearance at Leonor’s 18th birthday and during Easter in Madrid.
With a year left at UWC Atlantic College, speculation is already rife about the younger princess’s future.
Unlike Leonor, she has the opportunity to decide whether she wants to be actively integrated into the royal family or whether she prefers to emancipate herself from the strict protocol and pursue a professional career independent of the Spanish crown.
According to reports in Bunte magazine, Sofia is gradually emerging from Leonor’s shadow and charting her own course.
This evolution has become more apparent in recent weeks with the confirmation of her first solo public appearance.
Although the date has not yet been set, the Infanta is expected to inaugurate her solo schedule during a photography awards ceremony.
