Infanta Sofia, daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, is facing an important decision that could affect her, her sister Leonor, and her cousins.
In 2009, the Spanish Royal Family received an inheritance of more than $10 million from businessman Juan Ignacio Balada, who, after his death, left his fortune to the Royal Family.
This inheritance included an emblematic building, the Balada Palacete, which was destined for the eight grandchildren of Juan Carlos I.
Currently, the Palacete is uninhabited and in disuse. Sofia now faces the responsibility of deciding the fate of this valuable property, which could be sold, rented, or even designated for a social project.
What is the inheritance that Infanta Sofia will receive?
The palace, currently in perfect condition thanks to a maintenance company, remains intact.
The Royal House has decided not to allocate it to other uses, even social, until Infanta Sofia, the youngest of the eight grandchildren of the King and Queen Emeritus, comes of age.
King Felipe has confirmed that the decision on the future of the palace will be made next year when Sofia comes of age.
It is expected that both Infanta Sofia and Princess Leonor will cede their share to a foundation, relinquishing their percentage of the property.
As Infanta Sofia is the only minor, her decision is subject to the consent of her parents or guardians and requires judicial authorization.
This process is a bit cumbersome, so the others will have to wait until Sofia’s next birthday to know the final fate of the palace.
