Irene Urdangarin and Borbón By Robert Marquez

Irene Urdangarin Becomes the First of Queen Sofia’s Granddaughters to Wear Her Heirloom Jewelry

Irene Urdangarin became the center of attention during the wedding of Theodora of Greece and Matthew Kumar, held in the majestic Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.

It was her youth, elegance and carefully chosen look that truly grabbed the flashes.

Not only did she wear a velvet dress with vegetal motifs, which once belonged to her mother, the Infanta Cristina, but she also wore earrings that were nothing less than a loan from her grandmother, Queen Sofia.

This is the first time that one of the granddaughters of the queen emeritus has appeared in public wearing her jewelry. Irene matched the dress with her grandmother’s striking earrings, a yellow gold piece with cabochon sapphires and moonstones.

This special piece of jewelry has been worn by Doña Sofía on several important occasions, such as in 1995, when Spain celebrated its inclusion in the European Union with a reception at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

What is most striking is that, so far, neither Crown Princess Leonor nor her sister the Infanta Sofia have worn any of the Queen’s jewelry.

The Infanta Sofia, in fact, has not yet had her ears pierced, and has not shown much interest in jewelry. For her part, Princess Leonor, who does wear earrings, has on some occasions opted for pieces from her mother, Queen Letizia, such as the aquamarine and diamond earrings she wore at the Princess of Asturias Awards.

    Irene, the favorite granddaughter

Unlike her cousins, Irene Urdangarin seems to have a more special connection with her grandmother, which was clear in her choice of these earrings.

Her dress, which also has sentimental value, was worn by her mother in 2010 during an event in New York. On that occasion, the Infanta Cristina wore the design without a shawl, revealing a waterfall neckline, while her daughter chose to cover herself with a shawl, adding her own personal touch to the outfit.

Irene Urdangarin has set a precedent within the Spanish royal family, being the first of Queen Sofia’s granddaughters to wear her jewelry.
