Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, 83, has made an unprecedented decision by announcing her abdication after 51 years on the throne.
She will be succeeded by her son, Prince Frederick, and his wife, Princess Mary.
The news has reverberated around the world, especially in England, where rumors of a possible abdication by King Charles (75) in favor of his son, Prince William, are growing.
Is King Charles abdicating?
According to expert Phil Dampier, Charles could follow in the footsteps of the Danish queen in the near future. Dampier told the Daily Mail:
“It has to make you wonder if in five or ten years’ time King Charles might think about doing the same if his health is failing or he just thinks it is a good time to pass on to William and Kate while they are still young.
On the other hand, Richard Fitzwilliams also expressed his opinion on the subject and agreed with Dampier’s idea.
Initially thought that Queen Margrethe’s abdication was intended to renew the monarchy. Margrethe may have “calculated that an aging monarchy was not a good idea, especially if she had reigned for another decade or so”.
However, some experts believe that Margrethe’s abdication was a way to protect her son’s relationship with his wife, Crown Princess Mary, amid controversy over the prince’s alleged infidelity.
