From May 10 to 12, Meghan and Harry visited Abuja and Lagos. They were invited by Nigeria’s chief of defense staff and attended several events, many linked to Harry’s Invictus Games for veterans.

Their trip was personal, not an official royal tour, since they stopped representing the British monarchy in 2020.

Interestingly, this visit happened 34 years after King Charles and Princess Diana toured Nigeria as the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1990.

In Abuja, Harry and Meghan joined a sitting volleyball event by Nigeria Unconquered, a charity that helps veterans and supports the country’s involvement in the Invictus Games.

Nigeria had its first national team in the 2023 games in Düsseldorf, Germany.

At the volleyball event, Harry and Meghan met with community members who came to watch and support.

Meghan had a special moment with a group of women, posing for photos, chatting, and hugging them.

This touching scene was captured on video and posted on TikTok by the fan account @megsmarkle.

The clip, showing Meghan putting her arm around one fan while talking to another, has been viewed over 628,000 times since May 11.

The post, captioned “She is so loved,” received more than 87,000 likes and over 1,500 comments, many praising Meghan and comparing her to Princess Diana.

One fan commented, “Just like LADY DIANA!,” referring to Diana’s full name, Lady Diana Spencer. Another wrote, “The people’s princess,” a title often used for Diana after her death in 1997. Another fan added, “This is the level of ‘go where you’re celebrated’ I’ve been wishing for her since the beginning! Love seeing her this happy.”

During her visit, Meghan thanked the community for “welcoming me home,” referring to a discovery about her ancestry revealed on her podcast, Archetypes, in 2022. Meghan shared that she had taken a genealogy test that showed she was “43 percent Nigerian.”

“I’m going to start to dig deeper into all this because anybody that I’ve told, especially Nigerian women, are like ‘What!'” she said.

At a Women in Leadership event in Abuja, Meghan expressed her gratitude for being included among the country’s empowered female voices. She described her visit as “eye-opening and humbling,” and said it was just the beginning of her journey to learn more about her heritage.
