In a moment that has recently resurfaced, Princess Kate stated that Prince William was fortunate to be with her—a remark that followed a “humiliating” breakup detailed in a new book.
At the end of 2006, William and Kate’s relationship hit a rough patch, culminating in William ending things over the phone.
While it’s known that the couple experienced a breakup before their 2011 wedding, more details have come to light through Robert Jobson’s biography, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, serialized in the Daily Mail.
Princess Kate’s Bold Statement Resurfaces
Fans responded to the new revelations by revisiting Kate’s proud declaration that William was lucky to be dating her.
Michael Cole, a former BBC royal correspondent, recalled this moment in the documentary William and Kate: A True Love Story: “Someone asked her, ‘Aren’t you very fortunate to be dating Prince William?’ and she confidently replied, ‘No—he’s very lucky to be dating me.’
“Despite coming from a different social background, she never saw herself as lesser. She’s always been very mature and almost motherly,” Cole added.
A clip of Cole’s comments went viral on TikTok, receiving nearly 10,900 likes and 119,000 views. The video was shared with the message: “LOUDER baby.”
TikTok user @calabrisellaluna commented, “Now, that’s a Queen!!” “She knew she was THE prize, knew her worth, as she should,” wrote @imkay2006. “Sis is iconic,” added @moonchild1005.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Breakup
Jobson’s book provides further insight:
“As Catherine approached her 25th birthday in January 2007, William unexpectedly canceled plans to join a New Year gathering in Dundee with the Middletons. She sensed something was off, not helped by the media’s confident predictions of a royal engagement.
Shortly after, William, then a 2nd Lieutenant in the Blues and Royals, called her to suggest they take a break. He explained they both needed ‘a bit of space’ and couldn’t promise marriage.
In a heartfelt 30-minute conversation, they acknowledged they were on ‘different pages.’The breakup was a crushing blow for Catherine, especially being dumped over the phone. Although it wasn’t the first time William ended their relationship, this time felt definitive.”
William didn’t shy away from enjoying his newfound freedom. “He celebrated their breakup with a night of drinking at the Mahiki nightclub in Mayfair with friends,” Jobson wrote.
“‘I’m free!’ he shouted while performing a drunken robot dance, encouraging his friends to ‘drink the menu,’ which they nearly did.
“Naturally, Catherine heard about his antics, which seemed to mark a humiliating end to their romance that began when they were students at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.”
Despite this, it wasn’t the end for William and Kate. They reconciled and married in April 2011 in a fairy-tale wedding at Westminster Abbey in London.
