Almost a week ago, the Princess of Wales shocked the world by revealing that she has cancer.
In a touching video recorded in the gardens of his home in Windsor, Kate Middleton began by saying that her abdominal surgery last January was successful, but after further tests, her medical team discovered that she has cancer.
She also mentioned that she was in the first stage of chemotherapy.
Although she did not clarify what type of cancer she has, her speech, which lasted just over 2 minutes, generated all kinds of reactions and put to rest the dozens of rumors surrounding her health and notable absence from public life.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” she said. “The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
Calling the news a “huge shock,” Kate said that she and Prince William “have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.”
The princess, so famous for her unfailing poise, spoke of initially keeping the diagnosis private.
Her voice cracked at the mention of Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, whom she shares with Prince William.
“It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be okay,” she said. “As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.”
Details from Kate Middleton’s video
In an honest and moving speech, the Princess shared personal reflections and revealed a significant secret that also links her to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
She spoke boldly to the nation and the world, with a sea of yellow daffodils behind her. The choice of flowers was deliberate and meaningful.
The daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and a symbol of support for those affected by cancer, underscored her message of solidarity with those affected by this disease.
This flower, also one of the first to herald spring, represents the end of bleak winter days and is a symbol of hope.
This same symbolism may have led Elizabeth II to include daffodils in her iconic speech during the coronavirus crisis in 2020.
Returning to the present, Kate Middleton smiled and expressed her daily strength and focus on healing. She reiterated her support for those battling cancer, urging them to keep faith and hope, and assuring them that they are not alone.
“At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope,” she concluded. “You are not alone.”
Reaction to Kate’s video
The Princess of Wales’ revelation about her cancer treatment has prompted many in the United Kingdom to seek medical checkups.
The same happened after Charles III announced his prostate surgery.
Cancer charities and the National Health Service have seen an increase in visits to their websites following the release of the Princess’s video.
Professor Peter Johnson, head of oncology for the NHS, said the Princess’s brave decision would save many lives.
