    Will King Charles abdicate
King Charles was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The announcement that King Charles has cancer has caused an uproar. This Monday, 5 February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced in a statement published on social media that the 75-year-old monarch had been diagnosed with cancer.

In the text, they explained that the diagnosis was made after the prostate surgery the King underwent last Friday, 26 January.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the palace said in a statement.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” they continued.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” the statement added. “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Will King Charles abdicate following his cancer diagnosis?

Following the uproar caused by the news, many are wondering if the monarch will continue to carry out his duties, and so far there has been no indication that he will abdicate.

The King remains positive about his diagnosis and hopes to continue working, according to The Telegraph.

“He is said to be “wholly positive about his treatment”, and “looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible”. He will continue to undertake State duties including his audiences with the Prime Minister, Privy Council meetings and red boxes”, the british daily reports.

This is not the first time there has been speculation about the late Queen Elizabeth II’s son stepping down, but the latest news has reignited interest in the future of the monarchy.
