A few hours after Kensington Palace announced that Kate Middleton had undergone abdominal surgery, the British royal family has announced that King Charles will also undergo a medical procedure in the operating room.

The 75-year-old monarch will undergo prostate surgery next week. Specifically, he will be treated for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The operation will take place in a London hospital, where the King will be transferred from his Balmoral residence, where he is on holiday.

Charles will need to rest for a short period and postpone some of his official engagements.

“His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure. The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation”, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

King Charles surgery: What is the prostatic hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, is a condition that causes an enlargement of the prostate gland and can affect the functioning of the urinary system.

“It is also called prostate enlargement,” explains the Mayo Clinic on its website.

It is a common condition in men over the age of 50. According to the Mayo Clinic, “An enlarged prostate can cause bothersome symptoms, such as blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. It can also cause problems in the bladder, urinary tract, or kidneys.”

    Enlarged prostate treatment

There are many treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The Mayo Clinic explains that these include medications, surgery, and other procedures. Your doctor will be responsible for choosing the appropriate treatment, which usually depends on the severity of your symptoms.

According to the spokesman, King Carlos III decided to make his diagnosis public to raise awareness among other men who may be suffering from the disease and to encourage them to see a doctor if they have any symptoms.

“Like thousands of men every year, the King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate.”

So far, the British royal family has not given any further reports after a busy day of updates on the health of its members.

It is known that Princess Kate will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days and will return home to continue her recovery.

She is expected to return to work after Easter, which is scheduled for the last week of March this year.
