Queen Sofia, 84, has said goodbye to her brother, the last king of Greece, Constantine, who died last January 10, at the age of 82, after suffering a stroke. In these hard moments for her it is important to feel the support of her closest relatives.
The dinner on Sunday and the funeral of Constantine of Greece held this Monday, has left images that have not been seen for years, the royal family almost in full: King Felipe and Queen Letizia with the emeritus King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, the infantas Elena and Cristina and their children three years after their last meeting of the whole family.
The Spanish royal family gathers to accompany Queen Sofia
The funeral of the former King of Greece Constantine II took place this Monday at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. King Philip, 54, and Queen Letizia, 50, were the first to arrive, then joined the rest of the family at the mass.
Queen Sofia has arrived accompanied by King Emeritus Juan Carlos and her grandchildren, the children of the Infantas Elena; Felipe Juan Froilan and Victoria Federica and the children of the Infanta Cristina; Juan, Pablo, Miguel and Irene Urdangarin.
The emeritus kings, their daughters and grandchildren arrived together at the Athens Cathedral, while Felipe and Letizia, for protocol reasons, had to sit on a different bench as acting monarchs.
Queen Emeritus Sofia devastated
Upon entering the cathedral, Queen Sofia approached the altar where there was a photograph of her brother Constantine and kissed the portrait under the gaze of her daughters Elena and Cristina. Undoubtedly one of the most solemn and emotional gestures of the ceremony.
Then, during the ceremony, Queen Sofia could be seen very sad. The mother of Felipe, Cristina and Elena said goodbye to her brother letting her tears flow.
After the mass Sofia and the rest of the guests traveled to Tatoi, accompanying the coffin to his final resting place.
Apart from the sadness of Queen Sofia, the family has left a picture that had not been seen for many years: all together as in the old days, despite the absence of Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia.
