The month of May holds a special place for Prince Felipe, 56, and Queen Letizia, 51.
In just days, the King and Queen of Spain will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, two decades of love with ups and downs, but which have made them one of the most acclaimed royal couples.
Unlike other royal families who celebrate such milestones in grandeur, there are no special events expected in Spain.
Prince Felipe and Queen Letizia are not keen on publicly celebrating such anniversaries.
It’s worth noting that they don’t even mention their respective birthdays, so nothing special is expected.
However, it wouldn’t be surprising if they cleared their schedules for a private evening, as they have done in the past.
The ‘Conflict’ of Felipe and Letizia on their Wedding Day
In light of this special anniversary, we wanted to recall some of the most anecdotal moments from that historic day when Spain took to the streets to celebrate the wedding of the then Prince and Princess of Asturias.
Letizia Ortiz woke up with a fever that day and was visibly uncomfortable in an imposing dress inspired by nobility created by Pertegaz, weighing over 15 kilograms. But in every wedding, the food is what matters.
The couple entrusted the menu to prestigious chefs Ferran Adrià and Juan Mari Arzak, a big bet that consisted of a dozen cold and hot appetizers, a starter, a main course, and dessert.
However, a detail that many don’t know is the ‘conflict’ that arose between Prince Felipe and Queen Letizia over the type of dessert to serve to the guests.
Pastry chef Paco Torreblanca was in charge of the cake. And it was he who revealed years later that the current king and queen had trouble agreeing because they had very different tastes.
Since Prince Felipe likes dark chocolate, the chef proposed an option that Letizia didn’t like.
So, she stepped back and opted for a more classic dessert based on milk chocolate and hazelnuts, more to the bride’s taste.
The then Prince of Asturias gladly accepted, and the final result was a grand wedding cake two meters tall, weighing around 150 kilograms. A true engineering marvel that amazed thousands of guests with its taste and aesthetics.
The Complete Menu of Felipe and Letizia’s Wedding
The grand hall of the Royal Palace of Madrid hosted the wedding celebration of the heir to the throne with journalist Letizia Ortiz.
An unprecedented display where food, as in every proper wedding, played a leading role.
The menu designed by prestigious Spanish chefs Ferran Adrià and Juan Mari Arzak consisted of a cocktail with 12 iconic dishes such as:
- Jabugo ham.
- Manchego cheese.
- Croquettes.
- Esqueixada tartlets.
- Rock fish mousse.
- Stuffed crab potatoes.
- Mushroom toasts.
- Fried green asparagus tips.
- Breaded fried scallops.
- Gamonedo and La Peral cheese canapés with apple.
- Sole curls, and vegetable baskets.
Once seated at the table, the starter was a puff pastry tartlet of seafood on a vegetable base, followed by a main course of roasted Palencia capon with thyme and nuts.
All accompanied by a select selection of wines from across Spain. As a nod to the bride’s homeland, cider could not be missing.
Considering it was a wedding with 1,800 guests from all over the world, the chefs created 7 alternative dishes for vegetarians, allergic individuals, and those intolerant to gluten.
