King Felipe VI and his father, King Emeritus Juan Carlos, met again in public this Monday, this time in Madrid.
This reunion comes after the meeting at Windsor Castle, near London, on February 27th at the memorial service for Constantine of Greece.
On this occasion, it was the funeral in memory of Fernando Gómez-Acebo, who died at the age of 49.
Fernando was a cousin of Felipe VI and nephew of the emeritus King Juan Carlos I.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia at the funeral of Fernando Gómez-Acebo
It was just a few minutes before 6 p.m. when the King and Queen made their appearance at the church located in the heart of the capital.
Queen Letizia wore a sober black dress that she combined with shoes and handbag of the same color, as well as an elegant pearl brooch from the Bourbon jewelry box.
For his part, King Felipe wore a suit and black tie.
The funeral was also attended by Queen Emeritus Sofia, wife of Juan Carlos I, as well as his two daughters, Infantas Elena and Cristina.
The 86-year-old king emeritus arrived in the same car as Queen Sofia and his daughter Cristina, and, after the funeral, they left in different vehicles.
The funeral ceremony took place in the cathedral church of the Armed Forces in the presence of numerous relatives and friends of the deceased.
This is the second time this year that Felipe VI and his father, King Juan Carlos, meet again in public.
So far it is not known when the king emeritus, who arrived in the Spanish capital last Friday, and on Saturday attended the wedding of the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, will leave Madrid.
It is also unknown where he has stayed, although everything suggests that he has done so in a private residence, and not in the Zarzuela Palace.
Felipe VI of Spain and his father also met at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of England, on September 19, 2023 in London.
It was the first occasion on which they appeared together in public since Juan Carlos I settled in Abu Dhabi in 2020 because of the uproar caused in Spain when it became known about his business dealings abroad.
The funeral in memory of Fernando Gómez-Acebo was held a month after the death of Juan Carlos I’s nephew on March 1 in a hospital in Pozuelo de Alarcón due to respiratory failure that he could not overcome.
On this occasion, family and friends had the opportunity to say goodbye and honor the memory of the young man, who was affectionately known as “Coco”.
