On the night of August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a tragic car accident in Paris, leaving an irreparable void in the lives of her two sons, William and Harry.
Details of the princess’s life have become relevant again with the premiere of the latest season of The Crown, the Netflix series that focuses on the life of the British royal family and, for this latest season, the life of Princess Diana.
Hours before her death, the Princess had spoken to them on the phone from her hotel, never imagining it would be the last time she would hear their voices. What did Diana say to her children in that last phone call?
Diana’s phone call to William and Harry
According to the documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy,” released in 2017, the princes recalled the moment with pain and nostalgia.
The two were at Balmoral Castle in Scotland with their father, Prince Charles, and other members of the royal family.
They were playing with their cousins when they received a call from their mother, who was on vacation with her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed.
William, who was 15, was the first to speak to Diana. As he recounted, the conversation was brief and casual, with nothing special to note; he also revealed that he and his brother were in a hurry to end the call so they could continue playing with their cousins.
He admitted that if he had known what was going to happen, he would not have been so indifferent to his mother; he also mentioned that it was a moment that weighed on his life.
Harry, who was 12 years old, was the second to speak to his mother. As he recounted, the conversation was similar to his brother’s, with no sign of concern or farewell.
Both princes expressed regret that they had not made more of this last contact with their mother and told her how much they loved and missed her.
However, they also acknowledged that it was normal for them to act this way as children who were used to talking to their parents on the phone when they were separated.
The loss of a mother is something that Prince William and Prince Harry have been dealing with for most of their lives.
In his book “Spare”, Harry also mentions this last conversation and the behavior of the then Prince Charles when he told him that his mother had died.
