This year, the Princess of Asturias Awards will have a special touch due to the prominent role that Princess Leonor will play.
Although there had been speculation that she would preside over the gala alone, she will continue to be supported by her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, as well as her sister, Infanta Sofia.
However, the protagonism of the heiress will be much more notable in this edition, marking a new stage in her role within the Spanish monarchy.
Leonor at the Princess of Asturias Awards 2024
The Princess of Asturias Foundation has already confirmed that 2024 will mark the tenth anniversary since Leonor assumed the position of Honorary President. This important milestone will come with an adjustment to the event’s agenda, as Leonor is expected to be in charge of closing the ceremony.
Leonor’s trip to Asturias will begin on October 24, one day before the awards ceremony, when she will receive the Medal of Asturias in a solemn ceremony to be held at the library of the University of Oviedo.
This recognition comes in honor of his constant support to the autonomous community and his role as a key figure in the Royal House. In addition, on the same day, she will be named honorary mayoress of Oviedo, a symbolic title that highlights her ties to the region.
October 25 will be the central day, with the Princess of Asturias Awards gala at the Campoamor Theater, where Leonor will once again be the center of attention.
As a novelty, it is expected that the princess will be the one to give the final words, a moment that could mark the beginning of her leadership in these important events.
On October 26, following the tradition of previous years, the royal family will visit the Exemplary Village of Asturias, which on this occasion will be Sotres, in the municipality of Cabrales.
In this event, the princess will have the opportunity to share with the local inhabitants, something that has always been well received by the public. In addition, she will deliver another speech in which she is expected to highlight the importance of community work and the values of the region.
After these hectic days, Leonor will have to return to her duties at the Naval School in Marin, where she continues her military training.
Her sister Sofia, meanwhile, will be able to enjoy a few more days of rest, coinciding with the autumn vacations of her school in the United Kingdom.
Undoubtedly, it will be a before and after for Princess Leonor, who little by little begins to assume a more relevant role in public life and to approach the future that awaits her as Queen of Spain.
