Leonor of Borbón By Robert Marquez

Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia Renounce a Significant Inheritanc

While what I’m about to share may sound technical, it reveals a lot about how Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia perceive their public roles. Both have decided to donate their share of Juan Ignacio Balada Llabrés’ inheritance to the Hesperia Foundation.

It’s not a small gesture. They could have accessed the inheritance once Sofia reached adulthood, but they chose to donate it for social purposes. At a time when every move she makes is scrutinized, this choice speaks louder than any speech.

What is the story behind this inheritance?

The case has a long history. Balada, a Menorcan businessman who passed away in 2009, bequeathed his entire estate to the royal family: half to the princes at the time and the grandchildren of the retired monarchs, and the other half to establish a foundation.

After much internal debate, the current monarchs accepted their share, but donated it entirely to the Hesperia Foundation, which was established in 2010 for the social purpose he had envisioned.

For years, it remained unclear what the eight grandchildren would do with their share. We now know that Leonor and Sofía have taken action, each with a 3.12% stake, while we await the decisions of their remaining cousins.

What properties does this legacy include?

Balada’s assets include homes, land, financial funds, and a property that consistently sparks curiosity: the Palacete Balada in Ciutadella. It spans approximately 500 square meters, featuring a classic design, gardens, and a presence that explains its transformation into a local symbol. It is uninhabited, well-preserved, and awaiting a new purpose.

Spanish media report that the city council has repeatedly requested its use for social purposes, but the fragmented ownership and the underage status of many heirs have prevented any progress. With Leonor and Sofia stepping down, the board becomes more flexible.

    What could happen now?

The sisters’ donation to the Hesperia Foundation opens doors. We still don’t know what will happen to the mansion or the other properties, but this decision opens the door to considering options for public use or social projects in Ciutadella.

If one thing is clear, it’s that Balada wanted his legacy to have a purpose. And with this step, the king’s daughters align themselves with that vision, giving the foundation room to act and, perhaps, to breathe new life into a heritage that had been dormant for years.
