After several days without appearing in public, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofia reappeared in Mallorca with a plan that struck me as both simple and eloquent: an afternoon at the movies with the family.
It was this Thursday at the Rivoli Cinemas in Palma, and I really loved seeing them like that, relaxed, enjoying something so ordinary away from the official spotlight. They chose to see In a Place of the Mind, a documentary with a lot of depth that addresses mental health, art, and social transformation, and which is part of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest, the same festival that Letizia will close in a few days.
Letizia, Leonor, and Sofia: movie afternoon in Mallorca
Beyond the symbolic nature of the outing, it was also interesting to see their style choices.
The queen wore a black and white polka dot dress, flat sandals, and a large bag that gave her a summery look.
Leonor opted for a very fresh look: wide green trousers, a white top, and a raffia bag. And Sofia, true to her more sober style, chose a black midi dress.
The three were coordinated, but without looking uniform.
This outing marked their first appearance outside the Marivent Palace, where they have remained fairly discreet since their arrival on the island.
The only time they left the radar was Leonor and Sofia’s brief trip to Switzerland for the Women’s Euro Cup final—where they shared a box with Prince William and Princess Charlotte—and Letizia’s lightning visit to Tenerife for an event at the Cervantes Institute. Other than that, everything had been strictly private… until now.
I like to think that this trip to the cinema was not just another outing. Choosing that particular documentary, doing it together, and allowing themselves to be seen right now, as their institutional reappearance approaches, carries weight.
