In the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Meghan Markle’s choice to remain silent has taken many by surprise.
Back in 2020, she was vocal about civic engagement, encouraging Americans to vote alongside her husband, Prince Harry.
Their involvement led to a notable reaction from former President Donald Trump and sparked discussions about the political boundaries for royals living in the United States.
This time around, however, Meghan has chosen a different path, avoiding any public endorsement or active campaigning.
Why Meghan Markle Has Stayed Silent During the 2024 U.S. Election
In 2020, Meghan, though careful not to explicitly back a candidate, aligned herself with social causes, advocating for compassion, justice, and the power of individual voices. She even joined Michelle Obama’s voter initiative, “When We All Vote,” a move that raised eyebrows given its association with prominent Democratic figures.
Harry also contributed, speaking out about the importance of countering hate speech as Americans headed to the polls, which many saw as an implicit critique of Trump.
Unsurprisingly, Trump responded sharply, leading some to question whether the couple’s political activity conflicted with their royal titles.
Four years later, Meghan and Harry’s roles have evolved, as has their public approach.
Since 2021, they have no longer held honorary royal titles, following Queen Elizabeth II’s decision to officially end their half-royal status.
With a greater distance from the royal family and its traditionally neutral stance, many expected them to be more outspoken in this election cycle, especially with Kamala Harris in the Democratic spotlight, attracting endorsements from figures like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
However, Meghan’s silence seems to reflect a calculated decision. Edward Coram James, CEO of the digital marketing firm Go Up, suggested that a public endorsement from Meghan might bring more challenges than benefits.
James pointed out that her core supporters likely align with Harris already, meaning her endorsement could have minimal impact or even unintended consequences for the campaign.
Meghan’s choice to remain quiet doesn’t necessarily signal indifference but may hint at a more reflective stance on her influence in American politics.
