The 41-year-old actress talked about various topics in her life but one moment in particular caught the attention powerfully. The first episode was called “The Misconception of Ambition” and there she shared with tennis player and friend of the duchess, Serena Williams.
The two talked about what women face when they are labeled as “ambitious,” in reference to the comments she received when she began her relationship with Prince Harry.
“I don’t remember hearing the negative connotations of the word ambition until I started dating my now-husband. And apparently ambition is a terrible, terrible thing for a woman, according to some,” Markle said.
When they touched on how they coped with motherhood, Meghan first recounted how their son Archie was saved from a fire in his bedroom. The event happened during the Sussexes’ 2019 tour of South Africa, when the couple’s first child was just four months old.
Prince Harry’s wife revealed that the little boy’s nanny, named Lauren, was with the child in the room where he was supposed to sleep, but when she went downstairs to get a snack she took him with her, it was at that moment when the heater in the room caught fire.
“Our amazing nanny Lauren was crying her eyes out. She was supposed to put Archie down for a nap, but she went to get a snack downstairs,” Meghan explained.
“During that period of time when she went downstairs, the heater in the nursery caught fire. There was no smoke detector, someone smelled smoke down the hallway, so they went in and were able to extinguish it. He was supposed to be sleeping in there,” the duchess said.
She recounted that the event was not made public until now and that despite the nerves and anxieties of the moment both she and Harry had to continue with their agenda “as if nothing had happened.”
“We finished the engagement, got in the car and they tell us there was a fire in the baby’s room,” she recounted. “We went back. And, of course, as a mother, you go, ‘Oh, my God, what?’ Everyone was crying, in shock. And what were we supposed to do? Go out and make another official commitment. This doesn’t make any sense, you have to tell people what happened.”
After the incident, the couple continued with their schedule. “And even though we were moved to another location afterwards, we still had to leave our baby and go make another official commitment.”
This is the first episode of “Archetypes” where Meghan hopes to chat with historians, experts and women who have experienced being pigeonholed. “This is Archetypes, the podcast where we dissect and explore the labels that try to hold women back,” the Duchess said in the introductory audio.
“I’ll have conversations with women who know all too well how these pigeonholing shape our narratives. And I will talk to historians to understand how we got here in the first place,” Meghan assured.
