According to a royal commentator, Prince William supposedly “banned” Meghan Markle from wearing Princess Diana’s jewelry.
When Meghan and Prince Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, married in May 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Meghan chose a stunning Givenchy wedding dress. She accessorized with the elegant Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara and other simple jewelry pieces.
The tiara, an Art Deco masterpiece from 1932 featuring geometric patterns and symmetry, had not been seen publicly since Princess Margaret wore it in 1965. Meghan complemented it with a vintage Cartier bracelet and diamond stud earrings.
Despite numerous rumors before the wedding, Meghan did not wear any jewelry belonging to the late Princess Diana during the ceremony.
Prince William’s Ban on Meghan Wearing Diana’s Jewelry
Prince William, who gave his mother’s engagement ring to his wife, Catherine, was reportedly uneasy about Harry’s relationship with Meghan. He allegedly advised his younger brother to take it slow and let Meghan adjust to royal life.
This claim appears in a new biography of Princess Diana by author Robert Jobson.
Jobson writes that William even sought the Queen’s assurance that Meghan would not wear any of Diana’s jewelry, which had been made available to Catherine due to her rank.
Despite these alleged restrictions, Meghan has since been spotted wearing several pieces with connections to her late mother-in-law.
In Australia, she sported Diana’s butterfly studs shortly after announcing her pregnancy.
Her engagement ring features two diamonds from Diana’s collection, and she’s been seen wearing a gold Cartier Tank watch that some speculate belonged to the People’s Princess.
Most recently, during a trip to Nigeria in 2024, Meghan wore a diamond cross pendant reportedly gifted to her by Harry – a piece that once belonged to Diana but was never worn publicly by the late royal.
