Meghan Markle is once again at the center of the public conversation after the viralization of a video on TikTok that has reignited the controversy about her first meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.
The recording, which accumulates more than 2,1 million views and 200 thousand ‘likes’, shows a fragment of the documentary Harry & Meghan, in which the Duchess of Sussex recreates her first bow before the monarch in an exaggerated, almost caricatured way.
Meghan Markle’s Curtsy vs. Princess Kate’s Bow
In the video, Meghan explains that her gesture was similar to what you would see in a “medieval times, dinner and tournament” show, bowing dramatically and laughing as she recalls the scene.
However, what could have been an innocent anecdote has become a new focus of criticism.
Many have interpreted the reenactment as a mockery of British tradition and, consequently, of the Queen.
What is most striking about this situation is that Meghan’s version contrasts with what Prince Harry wrote in his book Spare.
In his memoir, the duke describes his wife’s curtsy as “deep and perfect,” with no hint that it was awkward or exaggerated.
This discrepancy between the two narratives has stoked debate over the veracity of the account presented in the Netflix documentary.
The TikTok video that has reignited the controversy also includes a series of images of Princess Kate performing impeccable bows at various official events.
These include her bow to King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey in December 2022, as well as her curtsy to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on her wedding day to Prince William in 2011.
These comparisons have led many users to point out the difference in the two women’s attitude to the traditions of the royal family.
