Since her return to Instagram, Meghan Markle has known how to capture the public’s attention.
Her profile has become a window into her day-to-day life, where she shares moments of her life in Montecito, her passions like cooking and gardening, and of course, details about her upcoming project with Netflix, With Love, Meghan.
However, one of her latest stories has generated quite a stir on social media, and all because of a garment with a very special meaning.
Meghan Markle’s Northwestern Sweatshirt
In a brief video shared over the weekend, the Duchess of Sussex appears strolling through the garden of her home in California.
Although the images show a relaxed and natural environment, what really caught the eye was the sweatshirt she was wearing: a current version of the iconic Northwestern University sweatshirt that Princess Diana wore in the 1990s.
Diana, mother of Prince Harry, was a trendsetter with her more casual looks. Her outings from the gym in London, dressed in leggings and baggy sweatshirts, continue to be a source of inspiration for many women.
In 1996, one such sweatshirt drew particular attention: a Northwestern University design, photographed as the princess left her sports center.
Nearly three decades later, Meghan Markle has been spotted wearing a similar garment.
Unlike other pieces in her wardrobe that have been inherited from Diana, this sweatshirt is not the original.
It is a modern version purchased at multi-brand retailer Nordstrom, featuring the distinctive Northwestern Wildcats graphic and priced at approximately $62.99.
As expected, the image was quick to spark divided opinions.
Some users on social networks criticized Meghan for, once again, “imitating” Prince Harry’s mother.
One user wrote, “Copying Diana”, while another user was more rude saying, “Sick woman”, another wrote: “Meghan needs a welfare check”, another online user said, “MM has been trying for years to get people to see her as Diana 2.0.
It is not the first time that the Duchess has been compared to Princess Diana for her style.
Where did Meghan Markle go to college?
Meghan Markle was a double major at the prestigious Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She graduated in 2003 with a degree in Theatre and International Studies.
For this reason, Meghan’s fans defended her choice of sweatshirt, recalling that the Duchess studied at Northwestern.
One online user wrote, “She puts on a sweatshirt of her alma mater and gets criticized for it,” another user didn’t understand the criticism, saying, “She wore a sweatshirt from the college she attended- and this is wrong why?”
For them, this is not just a coincidence or an attempt to replicate Diana, but a nod to her own academic history and the years she spent at the prestigious university.
The discussion remains open: is this a conscious strategy to reinforce the connection with Princess Diana or simply a garment with sentimental value for Meghan?
What is certain is that, once again, the Duchess has managed to get people talking about her, just days before the premiere of her new cooking show, ‘With Love, Meghan’.
