During her recent visit to Colombia, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, stunned everyone by speaking Spanish during a forum on Afro women and power, held at the Teatro Municipal de Cali.
Meghan, who attended the event with her husband, Prince Harry, showed once again her natural and close character, actively participating in the conference and starring in moments that reflect her simplicity.
Meghan Markle Speaking Spanish
One of the most commented was when, without hesitation, she got up to turn on a fan due to the heat in the place.
But, undoubtedly, what really caught everyone’s attention was when Meghan decided to start her speech in Spanish, causing a surprise that quickly turned into applause from the audience.
With a nervous smile, Meghan began by saying, “Hello, very good afternoon. I would like to start in Spanish.” This gesture was enthusiastically received by the audience, and Meghan explained that she wanted to thank the affection received in Colombia in a special way.
Meghan, who graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Theater and International Studies, has a personal history with the Spanish language.
In 2002, she moved to Argentina for an internship at the U.S. Embassy, where she began learning the language. Later, she continued her education in Madrid, where she took several courses to perfect her Spanish.
During her speech in Cali, Meghan recalled these times saying, “Forgive me that my Spanish is not perfect, because I learned 20 years ago in Argentina, but I am trying.”
The Duchess also took the opportunity to highlight the experience she and Harry have had in Colombia, mentioning that the country’s culture and history have been like “a dream” during their trip.
The connection Meghan has developed with Colombia’s Vice President Francia Marquez, who invited them to visit the country, was also evident.
Meghan did not hesitate to call Marquez “my friend,” a gesture that was interpreted as a sign of the closeness they have developed during this trip.
Prince Harry was also encouraged to speak Spanish during his speech at the Petronio Alvarez festival, although after a brief thank you in Spanish, he acknowledged his limitations with the language and sought Meghan’s help.
She, with her characteristic sense of humor, supported him and together they managed to handle the situation, exchanging phrases in English and Spanish to keep the conversation flowing.
This is not Meghan’s first encounter with the Spanish language. In 2018, she surprised a Spanish woman during a charity visit in the UK by speaking Spanish. However, the experience in Colombia was particularly significant, as it was the first time she faced such a large audience, speaking in Spanish after years of not practicing the language.
