Meghan Markle has made it clear that she prefers to be known as “Sussex” rather than by her maiden surname.
This revelation came during her new Netflix show when she playfully corrected actress Mindy Kaling, who had referred to her as “Meghan Markle.”
“It’s so funny that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now,” she remarked, emphasizing her attachment to the title she shares with Prince Harry and their children, Archie and Lilibet.
Meghan prefers the surname Sussex
The title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex was granted to Harry and Meghan by Queen Elizabeth II upon their marriage in 2018.
However, in recent years, there have been ongoing debates about whether they should retain the titles following their public criticisms of the royal family.
Despite this, Meghan now expresses a deep connection to the name.
“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that Archie, Lili, H, and I all have it together. It means a lot to me,” she shared in a recent interview with People magazine.
The Sussex name, she added, is “part of our love story.”
Interestingly, while Meghan and Harry also hold the titles of Earl and Countess of Dumbarton, they rarely use them and are not expected to pass them on to their son, Archie.
Additionally, due to the terms of their royal exit agreement, they are prohibited from using “SussexRoyal” for branding purposes. Nonetheless, they have continued to operate under “The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
Meghan’s statement about her name coincides with the launch of her latest Netflix project, With Love, Meghan, an eight-part cooking series.
The show, which was originally scheduled to premiere in January but was delayed due to the Los Angeles fires, now premieres on March 4.
Her return to the public eye doesn’t stop there. Meghan has also been making waves with her new lifestyle brand, “As Ever.”
The brand, which was initially intended to be called “American Riviera Orchard,” had to be renamed following trademark complications.
This is in addition to his return to social media.
As Meghan continues to carve out a niche for herself in the world of business and entertainment, some critics remain skeptical.
Regardless of the criticism, Meghan appears determined to redefine her public image on her own terms, leaning into the title that once symbolized her royal life, but now represents something far more personal.
